What is an NHS Helath Check?
This is a health check-up available to people aged 40-74 which looks out for any early signs of problems. These problems can contribute to increasing your risk of developing diabetes, heart disease or stroke. Once found, these early signs can be managed and therefore reducing your risk of problems in the future.
Who is Eligible?
You are eligible if aged 40-74 without any of the following conditions:
heart disease
chronic kidney disease
diabetes
high blood pressure (hypertension)
atrial fibrillation
previous transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
inherited high cholesterol (familial hypercholesterolemia)
heart failure
peripheral arterial disease
stroke
currently being prescribed statins to lower cholesterol
previous checks have found that you have a 20% or higher risk of getting cardiovascular disease over the next 10 years
What Does it check?
You will be asked several lifestyle questions to see if anything could be improved.
Your height, weight and blood pressure will be checked. You may also have a blood test to check your cholesterol levels and look for any early signs of diabetes.
The appointment lasts up-to 20-30 minutes and is led by one of our Nursing Team.
Why Bother?
By identifying problems early, you can do something to fix them. The earlier these problems are fixed, the less time they have to contribute to increasing your overall risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and stroke later in life.
